Quality of Life
We may not be able to ask our pets if they are in pain or suffering in words, but there are signs and symptoms you can look our for to help determine the comfort level of your pet.
Symptoms of Pain & Discomfort
- Trembling or shaking
- Panting
- Slow to rise
- Whining or lack of vocalization (no greeting bark or noise)
- Decreased or no appetite
- Acting out of character
- Restless or unable to settle
- Sitting or laying abnormally
- Unable to bear partial or all weight on a limb
- Hesitant or reactive to touch
- Change in energy level
Quality of Life
Pain can be acute, relating to a specific accident or injury, or chronic, related to a long term injury or illness. If the pain is chronic, it is helpful to determine how much it impact’s your pet’s daily routine. Some questions to consider to determine if your pet is suffering:
- Is your pet eating and drinking normally?
- Is your pet able to go to the bathroom on their own?
- Is your pet able to move about unassisted?
- Is your pet’s personality still the same? Are the still playful or affectionate?
- Is your pet attentive to the world around them?
- How is your pet’s energy level?
- Does your pet hide more than usual?
- Is your pet sleeping well?
Changes in behavior are important to track and discuss with your veterinarian.
